Furnishing a Guest Room
If you plan to have regular guests in your home it’s a good idea to have a bit more than a pullout couch to accommodate them. Having a guest room ready when you need it will reduce stress on you and on your guest’s backs.
The most important piece of furniture in a guest room is the bed. You will want to get a large size bed to accommodate every guest from a married couple to your daughter’s friend. If you are short on space, I suggest getting a set of cheap bunkbeds. This will greatly increase your sleeping space while keeping the floor space use about the same. I know that many people look at them as a bed for children but there are now many more full bunk beds on the market, which are large enough for adults to sleep in comfortably.
Having a place for storing clothes is very important for your guests, especially if you plan to have them for more than one night. I suggest a bureau and, if you don’t have a closet with enough space, a coat rack at the very least. A mirror backed bureau is a good idea so that your guest’s don’t need to walk across the house to the bathroom every time they need to preen themselves or check their hair.
Bedside tables are very important and I didn’t really how much I used them until I moved and left mine behind. Even just one allows you to place a lamp near the bed for easy access and this will reduce the number of stubbed toes your guests will suffer while navigating the room in the dark. This is especially useful if you decide to use an L shaped bunk bed. A stubbed forehead is worse than a stubbed toe but both at the same time is terrible.
To recap, I suggest a short list of essentials. Full bunk beds, a bureau, a coat rack and bedside tables are the barest essentials. From there you can concentrate on the style and design. Comfort is first.
